Career Change Stories
Recently completed an MSc in Psychology and am looking to switch careers and do something else.

Am 40 next year but better late than never - am looking at market research as one possible avenue as I am a nosey cunt.

Anyone else taken the plunge? How did it go? Advice?

Abuse also welcome x

I was a printer for 12 years after leaving school.
Went to University at 28 and then ended up working in Local Government.
I'm now considering a third career. I have no idea what I want to do though.

I have been in an out of the city for years doing stuff like working on super yachts. Would like a little company of my own but I have no idea doing what. It's strange but everyone I ask says window cleaning but I can't see how that makes any money?

my wife worked for a scientific company after leaving school for 20 years. Got made redundant, used the redundancy money to pay for a degree, and is now a fully qualifiied teacher in ICT. Before she was made redundant she'd never have thought of teaching, but is very happy in her new role.

I know a few people who've made career changes, although it hasnt been easy especially in the early days, none of them have regretted it.

Re: Career Change Stories
I can see it being difficult to begin with.

Can also see myself not regretting it - still got 20+ years work in me so may as well do something I enjoy. Or at least don't hate...

Im 46 and wanna get out the city had enough of it. But have young kids and a mortgage so would probably need redundancy to get out and give me some time to set something up

Still trying to think of ways to get them to make me redundant

Dave,

Check out a book called Free Range Humans by Marianne Cantwell. There is also one called 'career change' with practical advice bu Joanne Penn.

Escape the city is a good blog also with loads of advice.

I looked seriously at doing something else but didnt really work out what I could do being the main breadwinner. What I did work out is that doing what I do somehwhere else actually helped (I moved to NZ in January)

Re: Career Change Stories
1. Decide how much money you need
2. Find out what you LOVE doing
3. Go after that with all your passion
4. Dont let any knock backs stop you. You will be earning what you need and doing what you love. It will seem like a holiday every day.

Its that simple

Cheers Lee - will check those out.

I am lucky in that I am not the major breadwinner - will have to cut back a bit here and there for a while though.

Re: Career Change Stories

You change careers BRANDED?

Problem I had was that, until recently, I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to do and had misconceptions about market research.

Has made a massive difference to my mindset having decided - rather than being apprehensive about getting out there and looking for a job I am relishing the prospect.

Branded

Thats good advice and exactly what i plan to do iv already worked it all out.

Unfortunately iv also worked out i need redundancy to get me going and give me some time for the early months that might be slow.

And as that possibly will never happen im a bit stuck at the moment

I have gone from being a musician to many roles in music including running music companies. I'm now on the board of two other companies one food the other timber. I've not made career changing decisions. I do what I like and enjoy and get paid well for it. I know its not exactly what you ask but my suggestion on what to do is the best way to have a fulfilled life. You must set what kind if miney you need otherwise you will always feel unsatisfied.

Re: Career Change Stories
Good advice - money a short term issue as I'd probably have to put up with a drop in wages for 2-3 years. Luckily other money freed up - no Uni fees and childcare costs drop off at 3 years old.

Rusta. There's abook on kindle called think and be rich. Its about 50p. It has many words of wisdom that would help you get through the difgicult times. It also has lots of examples and anecdotes. It was written 70 years ago so is slightly difgicult at times but is worth reading and highlighting everything that inspires you. I cant recommend it highly enough.

Re: Career Change Stories
